De Lucht lezen
Friday, 23rd of September at 15:00 my new work in public space “De lucht lezen” will be unveiled.
Location: De Reiger, De Rijp (city of Alkmaar).

De lucht lezen is a permanent work in public space, commissioned by the municipality of Alkmaar, the Netherlands, for the residential area De Pauw (English: The Peacock) in De Rijp. A wooden structure inspired by the Archimedean screw resembling a peacock, or pauw, placed atop a small hill in a park-like setting, together with two oval mirrors reflecting the sky at locations near-by. The work references the historical use of windmills to reclaim the land from the sea, and the position of De Rijp as a former harbour with a sawmill. De lucht lezen evokes the most important quality of a traditional miller: the ability ‘to read the sky’, which attains new meanings in the context of climate change and rising sea levels.

Feeding from the Tree of Knowledge
A tribute to an under-appreciated life form. The work Feeding from the Tree of Knowledge took a tiny lichen found on the bark of the university's founding tree as a starting point. This tree has been witness to all the knowledge gained at the campus since 1864 and can therefore be considered the NMBU’s Tree of Knowledge. Taking the lichen symbolises the passing on of knowledge to the new campus. A monumental type of filigree, modelled after a lichen, casted in bronze (3,4 x 3,2 x 4,75 m) and ‘planted’ on an artificial rock atop a hill in the heart of a new park scape that will serve as a meeting point in the students’ learning garden. Campus Ås, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Oslo, Norway, commissioned by KORO, Norway.
Opening 1 September 2021

Feeding from the Tree of Knowledge
‘Monument for a Lichen’, a tribute to one of the most important life forms on earth. Work in progress. Fifteen 3D-printers printed day and night for 150 days, to create the model for my new work, and the result is now in the hands of the casting company…

The NMBU is one of the oldest Universities of Norway. Originally it was an agricultural school but has now developed into a multidisciplinary University of Life Sciences. The work Feeding from the Tree of Knowledge takes lichen as a starting point to address the fragility of the planet. The work is associated with an ethical question, namely, how we can handle the earth responsibly. At the same time the work uses cultural-historical references and links the agricultural revolution to the expulsion from Paradise and refers to themes from Norwegian mythology. The lichen that was used for the work comes from Tuntreet, the tree that witnessed all the knowledge gained at the Campus, which was planted in 1864 as a symbol to the agricultural school’s founding. This little symbiotic organism is captured by means of a high-resolution computed tomography scan (CT-scan). A monumental type of filigree is subsequently modelled after the lichen – a bronze sculpture of 3,4 m x 3,2 m x 4,75 m – that will be placed on a hill and will form the center of the new parkscape.
Realization 2018-2020. Campus Ås, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Oslo, Norway, commissioned by KORO, Norway.

Der Stein des Weisen

Will be finalised midsummer 2018 and inaugurated September 3rd 2018.

The contemporary artwork Der Stein des Weisen reactivates the historic pedestal that carried Hendrick de Keyser’s famous statue of humanist Desiderius Erasmus for around three centuries until it was replaced in 1964. This transhistorical work of art safeguards the nearly forgotten base for the future with a glass shelter and leaves open the possibility of one day being reunited with its original bronze statue. The pedestal is accompanied by a monumental stainless-steel sculpture that resembles a thought or speech bubble. The highly polished surface of the bubble reflects the spectator and the surroundings. The ensemble invites the beholder to follow in Erasmus' footsteps, contemplate the philosopher's thoughts and re-examine his legacy.
Artwork commissioned by the Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2012 and generously supported by the Mondriaan Fund.

SAVE OUR SOULS

Permanent intervention in public space, Münster, Germany; Installation of a light sign on the roof of the deconsecrated Trinity Church (Dreifaltigkeitskirche).

Save Our Souls – 2013, Profanierte Dreifaltigkeitskirche, York-Ring

Campus Woudestein: Kathrin Schlegel

C-Space is pleased to present two new solo exhibitions of German artist Kathrin Schlegel and Chinese artist Yu Honglei.

Kathrin Schlegel conceived the site-specific installation „Uncertain Ends“ for C-Space Beijing, using 999 white perfumed lilies. In Chinese numerology, ´9´ is a special number referring to all good things lasting. The lilies float under the ceiling of the gallery forming their own sky.
The lily (百合, bǎi hé) is said to help a person forget her troubles and symbolizes eternal love. A sky of white lilies seems to float in the space at a height of 4 metres. The hanging garden, probably referring to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World or to the Christian flower iconography, where the lily is a symbol of purity connected to the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The space is thus transformed into a cathedralesque metaspace, a cloud of unbearable beauty surrounded by soft haze. Following one of the essential doctrines or three marks of existence in Buddhism, the impermanence, the installation will be in constant state of flux. Whenever a quality reaches its peak, it naturally begins to transform into its opposite: the flowers blossom from a bud till prime of life and then die. The laws of beauty remain even in times of great distress.

Schlegel´s work departs from her knowledge situated in the site-specific interventions, and develops into a cultural practice through research-oriented and context-related artistic methods. She investigates the potentiality and interactivity of human experience through the medium of art in particular local environments and their everyday spectacles. Her temporary interventions challenge the common perspectives on these locations and events while attempting to produce new sets of (ambiguous) meaning in direct communication with the particular audiences that are being addressed. The investigation of group identities is thus being transformed into an open invitation for social and cultural participation at the stage for production of collective memory, visualisation of social values, and re-articulation of everyday life. Chasing the ephemeral and investigating the impermanence of being is a recurrent element in her works. An important issue for her in the decision about the medium is the authentic and honorable treatment of the aura to be found at the intersection of the sacred and profane. Indeed this search for the aura is also the reason that so much of her work has a theatrical flavor.
