Kathrin Schlegel’s work is typically site-specific and research-intensive. From subtle interventions, audiovisual and archival projects to room-filling installations and monumental works in public space: the location and context of presentation are key to her practice. Schlegel works in dialogue with a given setting and tries to uncover its (forgotten) layers of meaning. Often, her artworks are transhistorical (and at times transcultural) in nature. She combines present-day technologies with traditional craftsmanship, and contemporary renderings with historical artefacts, addressing the historicity of manufacturing processes as she looks for connections between past and present. Throughout her artistic career, there are particular fields of interest that she keeps coming back to, such as (material and immaterial) cultural heritage in relation to the present, questions of sustainability and the destruction of our natural environment, and the implications of technological progress. Schlegel is not a cultural pessimist though; her works provide opportunities for reflection, and sometimes even propose (partial) solutions. She considers a work successful when it allows people to see their surroundings in a different light, and when it provides new perspectives on an existing situation. While her research method is quite discursive, and the research process part of her work, the end result is supposed to be visually strong – a poetic image that is both clear and complex.
Kathrin Schlegel (*1977, Nordhorn, Germany) lives and works in Amsterdam. She studied at the AKI Academy of Art & Design in Enschede, the Netherlands, and at the Art Academy in Muenster, Germany, class Guilliaume Bijl/Timm Ulrichs. She also holds an MFA degree in Art and Public Space from the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam. Since 2000 she has been exhibiting in individual and group shows in Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, China, and the USA, and she participated in several public commissions both in the Netherlands and abroad.

Het werk van Kathrin Schlegel is zowel site-specifiek als onderzoeksintensief. Van subtiele ingrepen, audiovisuele en archiefprojecten tot ruimtevullende installaties en monumentale beelden in de openbare ruimte: de locatie en context van presentatie zijn essentieel voor haar praktijk. Schlegel werkt in dialoog met een gegeven setting en legt daarin (vergeten) betekenislagen bloot. Vaak zijn haar kunstwerken transhistorisch (en soms transcultureel) van aard. Ze combineert hedendaagse technologieën met traditioneel vakmanschap en contemporaine interpretaties met historische artefacten, waarbij ze de historiciteit van productieprocessen laat zien en naar verbindingen zoekt tussen heden en verleden. In haar artistieke loopbaan zijn er specifieke interessegebieden waar ze telkens weer bij terugkomt, zoals (materieel en immaterieel) cultureel erfgoed in relatie tot het heden, het verlies van gemeenschappelijke vormen van spirituele beleving, de kwestie van duurzaamheid in verband met de vernietiging van onze natuurlijke omgeving en de implicaties van technologische vooruitgang. Schlegel is echter geen cultuurpessimist; haar werk biedt ruimte voor reflectie en draagt soms zelfs (gedeeltelijke) oplossingen aan. Ze beschouwt een werk als geslaagd als het mensen in staat stelt hun omgeving in een ander daglicht te zien en wanneer het nieuwe perspectieven biedt op een bestaande situatie. Hoewel haar onderzoeksmethode tamelijk discursief is, en het onderzoeksproces deel van haar werk, moet het eindresultaat visueel sterk zijn – een poëtisch beeld dat tegelijk helder en complex is.

Ze heeft gestudeerd aan de Academie voor Kunst en Industrie (AKI) in Enschede en aan de kunstacademie in Münster, Duitsland, klas Guilliaume Bijl/Timm Ulrichs. Ze heeft daarnaast een master in Kunst en Openbare Ruimte van het Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam. Sinds 2000 exposeert ze in individuele en groepstentoonstellingen in Duitsland, Nederland, Finland, China en de VS, en ze diverse publieke opdrachten in het binnen- en buitenland uit.
